Major, Minor, and Exotic Currency Pairs Explained

Not all currency pairs behave the same way. Forex pairs are typically grouped into three categories — major, minor, and exotic — each with distinct characteristics around liquidity, volatility, and trading cost.

    Major Currency Pairs

Major pairs always include the US Dollar paired with another highly-traded global currency. They account for the majority of daily forex trading volume and typically offer the tightest spreads.

    • EUR/USD — Euro / US Dollar
    • GBP/USD — British Pound / US Dollar
    • USD/JPY — US Dollar / Japanese Yen
    • USD/CHF — US Dollar / Swiss Franc
    • AUD/USD — Australian Dollar / US Dollar

    Minor Currency Pairs

Minor pairs (also called cross-currency pairs) involve two major currencies but exclude the US Dollar. They tend to have slightly wider spreads than majors due to lower trading volume.

    • EUR/GBP — Euro / British Pound
    • EUR/AUD — Euro / Australian Dollar
    • GBP/JPY — British Pound / Japanese Yen
    • AUD/NZD — Australian Dollar / New Zealand Dollar

    Exotic Currency Pairs

Exotic pairs combine a major currency with the currency of a smaller or emerging market economy. These pairs generally have lower liquidity, wider spreads, and higher volatility.

    • USD/TRY — US Dollar / Turkish Lira
    • USD/ZAR — US Dollar / South African Rand
    • USD/MXN — US Dollar / Mexican Peso
    • EUR/TRY — Euro / Turkish Lira
RISK NOTE – Higher volatility in exotic pairs can create larger profit opportunities, but also carries significantly higher risk.

Choosing the Right Pairs as a Beginner

New traders are generally encouraged to start with major pairs due to their tighter spreads, higher liquidity, and more predictable trading sessions. As experience grows, traders may branch into minors and exotics, which often require a deeper understanding of specific regional economic and political factors.
